Over 830 Palestinians are held in Israel without charge or trial

presos
Ramallah, Dec 16 (Prensa Latina) More than 830 Palestinians are being held in Israeli jails without charge or trial under the controversial procedure known as "administrative detention", denounced an NGO.

Under that policy,at the end of november, 835 people, including minors, were imprisoned in Israel, the Palestine Prisoners Society said in a statement that .

The “administrative detention” is used by Tel Aviv to arrest Palestinians for renewable intervals that typically range from three to six months based on undisclosed evidence, which even the defendant’s lawyer is prohibited from seeing.

Systematically, numerous detainees under this measure have begun indefinite hunger strikes to expose their cases and force the Israeli authorities to release them.

Palestinians and human rights groups complain that administrative detention violates due process because it allows for the non presentation of evidence against prisoners, while they are detained for long periods without being charged, tried or convicted.

Recently, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories (B’Tselem), questioned the decision to put a Palestinian under administrative detention taken by the regional military commander without charge or trial, .

“According to the military law that applies in the West Bank, a person can be administratively detained for six months, but the order can be extended, so the imprisonment in practice is indefinite and detainees will never know when they will be released”, the NGO criticized.
