It is the Government’s new but limited legislative victory because the project underwent several modifications, although substantial issues such as readjustments in the National Electoral Institute and its Court remained.
The draft bill returned to the Senate on Friday to eliminate a clause called “eternal life,” which consists of passing votes to small parties that do not have them to continue with legislative representation, a clause that MORENA rejected despite having been presented by its ally, the Green Party.
As it had already been approved in the Senate’s minutes and this second round among Lawmakers was only to ratify or deny the senatorial decision, MORENA convinced the Green Party to renounce its proposal. If vetoed, the debate would have to start again from scratch.
The National Action Party (PAN), along with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), and the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) tried to recompose their electoral alliance “Va por Mexico” and presented several challenges to the reforms that they described as unconstitutional to the Supreme Court of Justice.
