The presidency said in a statement that the president of the Republic, as director and in charge of keeping and restoring public order in the country, under Colombia´s Political Constitution and the Public Order Act (2272 of 2022), has decided to appoint seven Peace Spokespeople to support the mission of de-escalating social unrest in the country.

These young people will work to promote reconciliationand and peaceful coexistence among Colombians, within the framework of Total Peace, the statement adds.

This decision was made after the analysis by the Intersectoral Commission for the Promotion of Peace, Reconciliation and Citizen Involvement, which continues assessing cases of people who were arrested for acts related with social protest following recommendations to the president about new Peace Spokespeople. Minister of Justice and Law, Nestor Ivan Osuna, told the press that after the study of each case, the Commission recommended that seven young people should integrate this first group.

The first appointed are members of social or humanitarian organizations (men, women, indigenous people, peasants, students and animal rights defenders).

This appointment does not suspend or put an end in any case to the judicial proceedings and they will have to answer to the corresponding authorities and attend all the judicial proceedings to which they are summoned in the framework of their criminal proceedings.
