Peru’s prosecutors seek 18-month jail for Castillo

Lima, Dec 14 (Prensa Latina) Peruvian Public Prosecutor's Office requested a 18-month pre-trial custody for former President Pedro Castillo, whose one-week pre-trial detention for announcing Parliament dissolution was completed on Wednesday.

Supreme Prosecutor Uriel Terán extended the request to former Prime Minister Aníbal Torres, who declared himself victim of judicial persecution and announced that he was going into hiding.

The measure was stated as the country has been experiencing a wave of protests opposing Dina Boluarte´s new government for calling for general elections, a constituent assembly, and the freedom of Castillo.

Prosecutor’s Office requested to Jun Carlos Checkley, Supreme Judge of Preparatory Investigation, that the former president continues in custody until the hearing on pre-trial detention is being held and magistrate decides on it.
