Panama accelerates Covid-19 vaccination

Panama City, Dec 14 (Prensa Latina) With the arrival of a new batch of 72,000 vaccines to the country, Panama on Wednesday accelerates the Covid-19 immunization campaign amid a sixth wave of the pandemic.

According to Health Minister Luis Francisco Sucre, the US pharmaceutical company Pfizer’s monovalent vaccines are being used to extend the population’s vaccination and emphasize the attention to children, among the most vulnerable sectors.

Health authorities recalled that having two doses to administer the bivalent injection is a minimum requirement, the first batch of which expects to arrive in the country in the next few weeks.

Itzel de Hewitt, a general coordinator of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), urged Panamanians to get the second dose before December 31 and can benefit from the bivalent vaccine in 2023 to fight all variants of Omicron.

The National Directorate of Pharmacy and Drugs authorized the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNtech Covid-19 vaccine in its new bivalent active immunization presentation to prevent Covid-19.

Since January 2021, Panama has maintained the vaccination campaign against the disease without interruption, in first, second, and third booster doses that are administrated free of charge in all health centers.
