Port-au-Prince, Dec 14 (Prensa Latina) A deadly resurgence of cholera in Haiti has claimed 288 lives so far, according to the Health and Population Ministry (MSPP) which also warned of a rising suspected cases.

As of MSPP´s latest report, local authorities indicated that 14,577 people showed cholera symptoms since the beginning of October, as the disease reemerged in a northern region of Haiti´s capital. 1,229 of them were confirmed cases.

Haiti´s current positivity rating is 39.2%, and 12,574 people needed medical care, most of them in Port-au-Prince.

On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that Haiti´s harsh situation slowed down a response to the disease.

The WHO -alongside the International Vaccine Supply Coordination Group- sent 1.17 million vaccine doses to Haiti so as to fight off cholera already reported in nine of the country’s 10 departments.

The cholera vaccination campaign is due to start off coming Sunday in Cite Soleil, Delmas, Tabarre, Carrefour and Port-au-Prince, in the West department, as well as Mirebalais, in the Center department, areas reporting highest cholera cases to date.

WHO highly recommended the vaccination campaign in combination with other health measures, particularly water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), in order to prevent the spread of the waterborne disease.
