Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a new five-point strategy for dealing with illegal immigration, including plans to fast-track the return of Albanian asylum seekers, and clearing the initial backlog of almost 150,000 asylum cases by the end of next year by doubling the number of caseworkers.
It also provides for an increased number of raids by immigration officers, as well as receiving migrants in former camps, student halls of residence and military facilities, and the creation of new internment sites.
Finally, it was reported about an agreement reached with Albania which includes the asylum application process, but accepts the mass expulsion of rejected cases.
Albania accounts for about a third, over 13,000, of the migrants who arrived in British territory this year aboard ships across the English Channel.
The UK already has reached a migration agreement with France to curb undocumented migrant flow trying to enter from the French coasts along the English Channel.
