Moscow denounces attempts to expel Russia from the Caucasus

caucaso
Moscow, Dec 10 (Prensa Latina) Russia sees the West's intentions to cut back Moscow’s interaction with Baku and Yerevan, as their intention is to expel Russia from the South Caucasus, said Denis Gonchar, director of the fourth department of the Foreign Ministry.

According to Gonchar, the persistent desire to cut Russia’s trilateral relations with Azerbaijan and Armenia is a constant, with the clear objective of expelling the Federation from the region.

It indicates that Washington and Brussels are afraid to even mention Russia in a positive light and recognizable key role of the trilateral agreements for the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, the diplomat noted.

Russia is also watching the activities of the European Union’s temporary observation mission in Armenia, as well as attempts to organize the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in the region, he said.

Gonchar recalled that it was thanks to the efforts of the command of the Russian peacekeeping forces in contact with both sides that the tension increase in the Armenian-Azerbaijani border area was stoppedo, last September .

At the request of the Armenian side, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) also promptly took a number of measures, in order to assess the situation on the ground, including, sending an observation mission to Armenian border regions, he said.

The situation in the border regions was discussed in detail at the annual meeting of the CSTO Collective Security Council held in Yerevan on November 23rd, the Russian diplomat added. He also specified that, in case of interest of the Armenian side, they will quickly make the necessary decisions on sending a CSTO observation mission to the region.
