Israeli prosecutor opposes granting powers to extremist MP

fiscal-Gali-Baharav-Miara
Tel Aviv, Dec 10 (Prensa Latina) Israel's Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, opposes granting far-right lawmaker Itamar Ben Gvir unprecedented power over the police as Minister of National Security, The Times of Israel reported.

Although the official acknowledges that she cannot do anything about it, she will not defend the initiative if it is challenged in the High Court of Justice, the national press said.

As part of the distribution of power after the recent victory in the elections, the designated Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, gave Ben Gvir the Ministry of Internal Security, now to be called National Security after the expansion of powers.

Gvir has been accused more than 50 times and convicted eight times for riots, hooliganism and racism incitement, the latter will now have full control of the police and will also control the border police in the West Bank, which was always under the command of the Ministry of Defense.

The Times of Israel highlighted that the politician will have almost total control over the police, with whose role he has expressed disagreement on several occasions, and in addition, he will be able to decide which issues deserve or not an investigation.

Plans to appoint the politician to that position raised a wave of concern in the region and harsh criticism from various Israeli sectors.

Ben Gvir has an openly racist and anti-Arab speech. He has kept for years a photo of Baruch Goldstein, who murdered 29 Palestinians in the Cave of the Patriarchs in 1994, in his living room. Gvir was also a member of the banned Kach party, founded by the ultranationalist rabbi Meir Kahane who was assassinated, questioned for his radical and extremist ideas and rejected even by other Israeli right-wing politicians.
