On his Twitter profile, Diaz-Canel wrote, “Eternal glory to Antonio Maceo, known as the “Bronze Titan,” and his brave followers, the fighters of the Cuban Revolution.”
On Twitter, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero recalled the death in combat of Maceo and his assistant, Panchito Gómez Toro, on December 7, 1896.
The prime minister also outlined how, 93 years later, the date was chosen to “pay worthy tribute to the Cuban internationalist fighters who fell in combat in the fulfillment of their duty.”
Marrero quoted Army General Raul Castro, “Antonio Maceo and Frank Pais are symbols of a people’s decision to give everything for the good of the homeland, for our unique and indivisible struggle; first, to make it free, dignified and just and, then, to ensure that it will always be so.”
