Colloquium analyzes human rights situation in Haiti

Haiti coloquio derechos humanos
Port-au-Prince, Dec 7 (Prensa Latina) Haitian organizations are holding a colloquium on Wednesday as a prelude to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is on December 10.

The event, coordinated by the Platform of Haitian Human Rights Organizations, will be run until Friday so as to analyze several aspects, including the importance of the medias in disseminating respect for citizens.

On Tuesday, journalists Colette Lespinasse and Hérold Jean François said that the medias and recent technologies have an impact on the construction of people’s image of the world surrounding them.

With that as a prerequisite, they encouraged communicators to denounce human rights violations and urges for protective mechanisms favoring the victims.

Any democratic society is based on human rights values. The culture of human rights is a necessity in the fight against social inequalities in the country, said Jean-François, director general of Radio Ibo.

The human rights situation in Haiti has deteriorated in recent years, while international agencies and organizations point out the impact on the most vulnerable populations.

The situation worsened in 2022 with gangs blocking fuel and food distribution, while massacres in poor neighborhoods have left hundreds of deaths and thousands displaced.
