Flora Fong recognized as Artist of the Year in Cuba

Havana, Dec 6 (Prensa Latina) Cuban painter Flora Fong was awarded today the National Prize as Painter of the Year, the most important award given here to those dedicated to visual manifestations.

The president of the jury, Alberto Lescay, who received the award last year, highlighted the bridges built by the artist based on Asian traditions, where her origins lie and her imbrication with the Cuban. In addition, the award recognizes Fong’s work in teaching, as a trainer of various promotions of artists in the national education system.

Likewise, the members of the jury highlighted the solidity and projection of her pictorial work, linked to the essences of Cuban culture.

According to Lescay, the quarry for the National Arts Award is very rich and on this occasion, almost twenty candidacies were evaluated, all with undoubted merits.

The jury for the 2022 National Prize in Arts was also made up of national prize winners Lesbia Vent Dumois and Nelson Domínguez, the international curator José Manuel Nocedjñ and the visual artist Liesther Amador.

After the news was released, the National Council of Arts congratulated Fong, 73, and noted that it is a “deserved recognition of the work of this beloved creator.”

The artist has already left a mark on the visual arts of the Antillean nation and internationally.

Her singular style, marked by drawings on nature, appears expressed in the composition of her works that recreate a chromatic variety, nuanced by yellow and blue tones.

In the same way, she is famous for the way she brings indigenous landscapes to canvas or cardboard, in which tropical sensuality and Asian tenacity stand out.

The Cuban engraver and illustrator, also recognized for making artistic kites with the oriental technique, has achieved balance and harmony in sculptural pieces, ceramics, stained glass windows, and fabric designs.

She was born in the Cuban city of Camagüey, on November 8, 1949, the daughter of Chinese and Cuban, she finished her secondary level studies at the Provincial School of Arts of that city in the specialty of Painting.

Starting in 1966, she continued her studies at the Cubanacán National Art School in Havana, where she graduated in 1970.

From 1970 to 1989 she was a professor at the San Alejandro School of Arts and she has remained closely linked to teaching.

The author of the well-known series “Remolinos y ciclones”, “Trópico” and “El Caribe” holds the Distinction for National Culture (1988), the Prize of the International Association of Arts (1985) and the Bourse of Studies award from the Italian Government (1988).

Her works are currently part of private collections of important gallery owners and museums in various countries around the world.
