Observation Post Officer Mukdas Sofian told Antara news agency that the 3,676-meter-high mountain has had 29 eruptions and six earthquakes and has continued to spew hot cloud avalanches since Sunday.
The Geological and Volcanology Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) provided life-saving recommendations, such as stopping all activities in the southeastern sector of the volcano along the Besuk Kobokan River.
Mount Semeru erupted on Sunday and emitted a hot cloud with a height of 1,500 meters above the peak, PVMBG recalled.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) informed that more than 1,979 people fled the area to seek shelter after the mountain erupted.
