UNESCO inscribes Syrian oud on World Heritage list

Damascus, Dec 1 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Ministry of Culture announced on Thursday to inscribe the crafting and playing of the Lute on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. In a communique, the Ministry stated that this achievement occurred during the 17th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), held in Rabat, the capital of Morocco.

The Ministry congratulated Syria and thanked all who participated and supported the preparation of this dossier, especially specialists, musicians, composers, and artisans who love their heritage.

The institution also thanked the Syrian Fund for Development for its outstanding efforts in preparing and reproducing the dossier and for following up with UNESCO authorities. The lute is a traditional stringed musical instrument often played in Syria. It consists of a pear-shaped sound box made of walnut, rose, poplar, ebony, or apricot wood.

Al-Qudad, Aleppo’s traditional songs, was inscribed in 2021 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity in Syria. The planting of the Damascus rose, and related craft practices were included in 2019.
