In 2050, in order to meet the growing demand for food, fiber and animal feedstuffs, this global production will have to increase by 50% compared to 2012, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu stressed.
According to Dongyu, under normal conditions this would imply at least 35% of additional drinking water resources.
Dongyu added that in this calculation FAO took into account that agriculture consumes 72% of the planet’s freshwater resources.
FAO´s latest report indicated that over 2 billion people are living in water-stressed countries, meaning that water need is higher than the amount available.
