Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited confirmed the discovery of those reserves in the Oil Prospecting Lease (OPL) 809 and 810 wells, inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.
Sterling Global Oil and New Nigeria Development Commission will also develop the oilfield.
The discovery of oil in commercial quantity in the country’s northern region came 62 years after the location and drilling of oil and gas in Oloibiri, South-South Bayelsa states.
The latter region, also called Niger Delta, has since dominated production in the sector with the largest hydrocarbon reserves.
With more than 37 billion barrels of crude oil reserves, Nigeria is Africa’s largest crude oil producer.
It imports gasoline, diesel, and derivatives for its consumption.
