Lebanon gives 190,000 cholera vaccine doses

Beirut, Nov 19 (Prensa Latina) Coordinated by the Public Health Ministry, Lebanon has managed to give as many as 190,000 cholera vaccine doses as part of its domestic immunization campaign in four governorates.

At the end of the first week of the domestic campaign, the results showed that half of those vaccinated are Lebanese, followed by Syrian refugees, Palestinians and residents of other nationalities, most of them aged five to 14.

In a press conference, Lebanon´s Public Health Minister Firas Al-Abyad said that 250 field teams, made up of 945 health and administrative workers, are covering more than six districts in the north of the nation to serve 53 localities and 45,000 homes.

Al-Abyad reaffirmed that the vaccination strategy will continue in the coming weeks to distribute 600,000 new doses, with the intention of reaching over 70% of the population.

The public health minister also stated hid ministry, in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO), submitted a request to receive another amount of cholera vaccine doses, totaling around 1.5 million, in order to start the second phase of the campaign.
