The request to provide drugs to terminate unwanted pregnancies stems from the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision, which legalized the constitutional right to abortion at the time.
The lawmakers, led by Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, want the FDA to lift certain restrictions on how patients can obtain Mifepristone and Misoprostol, which are safe and effective drugs.
‘The Supreme Court’s ruling endangers millions of women in this country who are facing restrictions to lifesaving care and rights,’ the lawmakers wrote in a letter to FDA Commissioner Robert Califf.
In the text, the Democrats asked the FDA to remove any ‘medically unnecessary’ restrictions like patient consent forms.
In 2020, the medication for abortions accounted for 54 percent of all pregnancy terminations in the United States.
