A study published by the FDA reported that 158 percent of pediatric poisonings in eight years involve Benzonatate, a medicine sold under the brand name Tessalon.
Although cough relief medicines are prescribed for children aged ten and older, most cases of unintentional exposure involve children under five years of age, the agency states.
Tessalon capsules resemble candy, which, according to the FDA, contributes to the uptick in accidental poisonings, primarily among 10 to 16-year-olds.
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggested not to give cough medicines to children with asthma at any age because the ingredients could cause severe side effects.
The FDA also recommended consulting a pediatrician before administering any medication to a child.
