The October 2 is part of an initiative promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness of the physical and psychological damage caused by alcohol consumption.
In this regard, the international organization implemented the Global Information System on Alcohol and Health, with the goal of managing data on intensity and features of alcohol consumption, its health and social aftermaths, as well as the implementation of policies.
Harmful use of alcohol is a casual factor in more than 200 diseases and injury conditions.
Beyond health consequences, the harmful use of alcohol brings significant social and economic losses to individuals and society at large.
In 2005, WHO passed a resolution calling on Member States to take steps to mitigate the harmful use of alcohol, committing to strengthen their capacity to respond to the public health problems caused by alcoholism.
