New hearing against former PEMEX director for Odebrecht case

Emilio-Lozoya
Mexico City, Nov 7 (Prensa Latina) The second hearing of Emilio Lozoya, former general director of Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), accused of embezzlement, should be taking place this Monday in which the Prosecution's Office will orally formulate an indictment for the Odebrecht case.

The sentence requested against Lozoya would result from applying the highest penalties for each crime he is accused of. These are: ten years for criminal association, 15 years for operations with resources of illicit origin, and 15 years for bribery, only in those related to the Brazilian company.

The proceedings will take place at the Federal Criminal Justice Center located in the North Prison, where the criminal case will be reviewed and in which Lozoya is accused of having received in bribes, 10.5 million dollars from the construction company Odebrecht.

In addition to the 40-year prison sentence against the former PEMEX general director, the Prosecution’s Office requested a sentence of more than 20 years for his mother, Gilda Margarita Austin, accused of collaborating in these corruption operations.

On Friday, Federal Judge Verónica Gutiérrez deferred ten working days to the intermediate hearing in the criminal proceeding against Lozoya Austin for fraud (it was obsolete) and overpricing in the case of an agro-nitrogen factory.

The general director of PEMEX during the Government of Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018) faces accusations of money laundering, bribery, and improper exercise of public service, after having received 3.2 million dollars from Altos Hornos de México (AHMSA) steel plant, so that the oil company could acquire the fertilizer manufacturing company at an overprice.
