According to the latest report released on Friday by NewSicilia, the transfer of immigrants to other destinations is almost paralyzed as undocumented immigrants continue to arrive.
As reported by the source, 121 people arrived this morning in three boats, including 28 women and 10 minors, while 385 immigrants landed on Thursday, mostly from Senegal, Mali, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Gambia.
The prefecture of the city of Agrigento, in the south of the island of Sicily, ordered that 360 people be transported via ferry from Lampedusa to the camp located in the town of Porto Empedocle, in the region, to try to alleviate the complex situation.
Moreover, 985 migrants are still aboard the Ocean Viking, Geo Barents and Humanity 1 ships, off the coast of Sicily, as a result of the refusal of the Italian Ministry of the Interior to grant them a safe port to land.
A spokesman for the European Union (EU) said last Thursday that it “is not responsible for the coordination” of rescue actions at sea but it must be stressed that saving those people “is a moral and legal obligation” of the member countries.
