On the fourth day of the power void, the leader of Parliament, Nabih Berri, insisted on the urgency of achieving a consensus and giving priority to the appointment of the new president of the country for the next six years.
Berri called on the parliamentary blocks to dialogue and put aside the discrepancies of the previous sessions in order to reach a solution on the representative of the Maronite Christian community to occupy the position of head of state.
According to the Constitution, the candidate must obtain two-thirds or 86 votes to win in the initial round of voting, and they require a majority of 65 votes to advance to the second round.
In case of vacancy, the functions of the president will be delegated to the Council of Ministers, in accordance with article 62 of the Constitution.
Given this scenario, the controversy in relation to the resignation of the interim government ended in the legislature with the recommendation that Prime Minister Najib Miqati advance in his tasks, in accordance with constitutional principles in light of the complex economic, financial and societal reality of the country.
