Arab League calls for presidential election in Lebanon

Najib-Miqati-y-Ahmed-Aboul-Gheit-768x576
Beirut, Nov 2 (Prensa Latina) The Arab League advocated the presidential election in Lebanon in the context of a constitutional vacuum after four unsuccessful sessions in Parliament to appoint the new president.

The interim prime minister, Najib Miqati, spoke on the sidelines of his participation in the Summit of Algerian States with the body’s secretary general, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who reaffirmed his full support for Lebanon and called on politicians to assume responsibilities to overcome the delicate stage.

According to the Twitter account of the Lebanese cabinet, the president of the League considered that the ongoing of the presidential vacancy for a longer period will have negative consequences on the country, in the light of the current challenges as a result of the worsening of the economic crisis.

Lebanon entered a constitutional vacuum on Monday night after the end of President Michel Aoun’s term and the legislature’s inability to achieve the required consensus regarding the next candidate from the Maronite Christian community to occupy the position of head of state.

Devaluation of the national currency, high costs of food products, hospitalization, education, transportation and electricity currently drag four out of five Lebanese into poverty, according to the United Nations.
