Russian scientists develop membranes for fuel cells

Celdas-300x188
Moscow, Nov 1 (Prensa Latina) Scientists from the Russian Polytechnic University of Tomsk reported having developed membranes for fuel cells, which allows obtaining ultra-pure hydrogen and energy generation.

The discovery will allow the Russian Federation to replace their imports, since the polymeric membrane is one of the main parts of fuel particles, and its main manufacturer is the US company Dupont, so said the press service of the university .

Valentina Sohoreva, researcher of the Scientific Laboratory of Radioactive Substances and Technologies of the Engineering School of Nuclear Technologies of the University of Tomsk, explained that the capabilities of the R-7M cyclotron were used to obtain it.

According to her, the joint use of radiation and radiochemical methods in the manufacture of the membrane managed to improve some of the characteristics compared to the US-made counterpart.

In particular, Tomsk membranes withstand higher temperatures than American ones – 110-120 degrees instead of 80.

Also, thanks to the use of domestic components, the Russian-made membrane will be about 15 times cheaper than Dupont’s, Sohoreva said.

The project has already aroused the interest of large companies such as KamAZ PJSC, Power Machines JSC, Biryuch Innovation Center, among others.
