As stated by President Emmanuel Macron, we wish to renew the bilateral relations between both nations, the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement, alluding to Macron´s congratulations Sunday night to Lula.
In this regard, Macron claimed that France will work together with the Brazilian president-elect and his government to open a new chapter in the bilateral relations and conduct a strategic alliance.
To continue and deepen our relations, we hope to move forward together on several top priority issues including political talks ahead of major contemporary challenges, particularly climate change, peace, multilateralism, international security, investment and trade.
The French Foreign Ministry supported Lula’s willingness to shield the Amazon, in a stance diametrically opposed to that of Bolsonaro who has been accused by Brazil and the whole world of indifference to the destruction of what many call the “lungs of the planet”.
In a too close election, Lula received over 60 million votes (about 51%), while Bolsonaro reached 58 million (49%).
