European Union pressures Serbia to sanction Russia

Belgrade, Oct 28 (Prensa Latina) The European Union (EU) today insisted with the Serbian government that that country join the community bloc's sanctions against Russia.

The president of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, also required that nation to align itself with the EU’s foreign and security policy to, she said, go in the same direction in political decisions.

At a press conference held in the city of Nis, in the south of the country, where she met with the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic, the senior official called for greater harmony between Belgrade and the anti-Russian policies of severe sanctions.

Speaking recently at the high-level segment of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, Vucic denounced the great pressure exerted by the West against his nation to punish Russia for its military operation in Ukraine.

Also at the beginning of this month, Prime Minister Ana Brnabic reiterated that the Serbian people refuse to apply sanctions to Moscow, because to a great extent they do not respond to their national interests.

On the other hand, it was learned that the EU will make investments in the Balkan countries to improve their energy infrastructure and counteract the supply of Russian hydrocarbons in the region.
