Havana, Oct 28 (Prensa Latina) Thousands of Cubans, mostly young people, gathered today in the capital's Plaza de la Revolución, from where they left for the boardwalk to pay tribute to the legendary combatant Camilo Cienfuegos.

Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel, led the walk, along with other senior leaders of the Communist Party of Cuba and the Government.

The traditional march ended by throwing flowers into the sea, in remembrance of one of the most respected chiefs of the guerilla commanded by Fidel Castro, who disappeared 63 years ago when the aircraft in which he was traveling from eastern Cuba fell into the sea.

His personal sympathy, jovial character, unfailing loyalty and courage, as well as his ability to connect with the masses, earned him popular affection and, from the first moment of the revolutionary struggle, the trust of Fidel Castro and the Argentine guerrilla, Ernesto Che Guevara, with whom he had a close friendship.

Camilo was the chief appointed by Fidel Castro to conjure up the betrayal of Huber Matos in the eastern province of Camagüey, without firing a single shot, and thus avoid popular confrontation against the traitor, entrenched in the Agramonte barracks in that city.

The conspiracy was defeated without a fight and Matos was arrested thanks to the soldiers’ respect for Camilo’s authority.

In an address about those events, the man also known as the Hero of Yaguajay, and Lord of the Vanguard, among other epithets, stated: ‘Because the people of Cuba know that for every traitor that emerges, new revolutionary laws will be made in favor of the people…’ .

‘Because the Cuban people know that for every traitor that emerges, there will be a thousand rebel soldiers willing to die defending the freedom and sovereignty that this people conquered.’

About the revolutionary hero Fidel Castro said: Men like Camilo Cienfuegos emerged from the people and lived for the people. Our only compensation for the loss of a comrade so close to us is to know that the people of Cuba produce men like him. Camilo lives and will live in the town.
