Argentine FM called for peace and unity at CELAC meeting

Santiago Cafiero
Buenos Aires, Oct 26 (Prensa Latina) Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero today opened the 23th Meeting of Foreign Ministers of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) calling for peace and unity.

During his speech at the meeting, held at the Palacio San Martín, Cafiero highlighted the importance of the representatives of the 32 member countries being able to analyze the work carried out this year based on the 15 axes outlined by Argentina as president pro tempore.

Among these aspects are the economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic, fight against corruption, food security, collaboration with extra-regional partners, the integration of infrastructure, environmental cooperation and the improvement of women.

Based on these guidelines, more than 60 specific actions were deployed, two thirds of which have already been completed thanks to the teams you lead, he said.

For us it is an immense pride to be here and have the opportunity to debate. The world is full of uncertainties, but Latin America is united and marks another milestone in this time of so many misunderstandings, he added.

Likewise, he urged to demonstrate cooperation and multilateralism with deeds.

This meeting, the one that will take place tomorrow and the bilateral meetings show the will for dialogue of a region that wants to continue being a zone of peace, he pointed out.

On the other hand, he pointed out that, given the visible limits of globalization, the fall in international trade, the effects of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, international actors are beginning to look for secure supply chains and this area becomes more attractive.

Latin America and the Caribbean have an opportunity favored by our twinning for years and the ability to resolve problems through dialogue tables. We have cultural, moral and economic assets and we are looked at by the world to be trustees of these chains, he assured.

However, he said, we must defend our needs and seek development with social justice, a productive chain that generates quality employment, technology transfer and scientific development.

In addition, she highlighted the relevance of a meeting that will take place tomorrow between the CELAC foreign ministers and members of the European Union with the purpose of strengthening the exchange between both blocs.

I call on you to raise the challenges that we have as a region, exhibit our potentialities and, above all things, reclaim the place that we want to have on a global level. Our role is defined by us, nobody else, he asserted.
