Opposition questions Sunak’s election as British prime minister

Rishi-Sunak
London, Oct 24 (Prensa Latina) The opposition today questioned Rishi Sunak becoming the new British Prime Minister, after replacing the resigning Liz Truss as leader of the ruling Conservative Party, and insisted on advancing the general elections.

The Tories (conservatives) crowned Rishi Sunak as prime minister without him saying that he intends to lead the country and without anyone having the opportunity to vote, the second head of the Labor Party, Angela Rayner, claimed on Twitter.

The deputy stressed that Sunak, who was the only candidate nominated by the conservative caucus to replace Truss, “has no mandate, no idea of what the working class needs.”

We need a general election so that the public can decide on the future of the UK, Rayner said.

The leader of the Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey, pointed out, for his part, that the only way to end the “chaos” is to bring forward the elections scheduled for the end of 2024.

Now we will see more of the same. Conservative MPs plotting and fighting each other, and totally ignoring the huge challenges facing the country, Davey said.

The Scottish National Party (SNP) also announced its discontent through its leader in the House of Commons, Ian Blackford, who announced that he will support Labor if they present a no-confidence motion against the new Conservative government.

The Tories cannot be allowed to impose a third Prime Minister without a general election. Voters have the right to decide, and the SNP is determined to guarantee it, he remarked.

Sunak, a 42-year-old former banker of Indian descent, won the internal leadership contest on Monday without opposition to replace Truss, because her only rival, the head of the conservative caucus, Penny Mordaunt, withdrew her candidacy at the last minute.

Truss, who replaced the also resigning Boris Johnson on September 6, after defeating Sunak in the internal elections held a month earlier, had to resign last Thursday, after the financial chaos caused by her erratic economic policy.

Analysts rule out, however, that the Conservatives agree to advance the general elections, because according to polls, Labor has an advantage of up to 30 percentage points in the intention to vote.
