Network of Haitian organizations calls against intervention

Washington, Oct 22 (Prensa Latina) More than 500 artists, academics, public figures and activists signed the open letter of the International Peoples' Assembly network calling for a Haiti free of foreign intervention, a US-based movement reported today.

As shared on Twitter by The People’s Forum, established in New York City, the group urges the world community and integration mechanisms, in particular, for popular and progressive governments, to reject the new occupation attempts in that Caribbean nation.

‘The solution to Haiti’s internal problems must be driven by the people themselves, without foreign intervention and prioritizing sovereignty, self-determination and democracy in the country,’ the text underlines.

Port-au-Prince has been experiencing an economic, political and social crisis in recent years, aggravated by the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse (1968-2021).

The armed groups grew and are currently established in strategic areas, where the numbers of kidnappings and murders are increasing.

Since mid-September, the gangs have also blocked the distribution of fuel, which puts at risk the operation of essential services such as medical care, water purification and public administration.

Politicians do not reach a common agreement and recently Prime Minister Ariel Henry requested the deployment of international forces to contain the action of the gangs, a decision that was considered outrageous by experts and received popular rejection.

‘It is evident that they are building public opinion to justify a military intervention. Creating a chaotic, unsustainable situation of humanitarian crisis helps this project,’ economist, political analyst and professor Camille Chalmers told Prensa Latina.

According to the letter from the International Peoples’ Assembly, that State faces a possible new military occupation similar to what happened between 2004 and 2017 through the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti.

All this also occurs while in that nation at least 37 people died as a result of cholera, an evil that has already reached four of the 10 departments of the territory, although the highest incidence is still in the capital.

The day before, the United Nations Security Council approved a resolution that seeks to put an end to the violence in Haiti by imposing sanctions on armed groups causing the destabilization of the country.
