Lula declines debate to fulfill electoral agenda in southeast Brazil

Lula-agenda electiva
Brasilia, Oct 21 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Friday declined to participate in a televised debate to fulfill his electoral agenda in Juiz de Fora, a municipality in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais.

The campaign by the Workers’ Party (PT)’s presidential candidate for the October 30 runoff vote informed that Lula would participate in a walk in Juiz de Fora.

It is the first visit by the PT leader to the district during the campaign since he was there in the first semester, even outside the electoral period.

The former labor leader expects to attend a televised debate this Friday with far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro, who seeks a reelection for the Liberal Party.

According to the Brazil of Hope coalition, an alliance of 10 political parties supporting Lula, there was an ‘incompatibility of agendas’ that Lula could not attend the confrontation with the former military officer.

In the absence of the PT candidate, the former Army captain will be interviewed by journalists on previously chosen topics.

The Electoral Justice confirmed that, in the first round of the October 2 referendum, the former unionist came first with 48.43 percent of the valid votes, excluding blank and null votes, and Bolsonaro received 43.20 percent. None of the two politicians for Brazil’s presidency achieved an absolute majority of votes, more than half of the valid votes, as the Brazilian legislation establishes to be elected president.
