With 24-hour work shifts, this unit, which bears the name of Robustiano León, has two generation units in operation, and when a third is active, it would contribute another 15 MW.
This hydroelectric plant, largest of its kind in the country, covers a 348-meter-long railway section with a 42-degree incline.
Main specialist Omar Lorenzo explained that the plant is capable of supplying electricity to the municipalities of Manicaragua and Cumanayagua (municipality of Cienfuegos), as well as another contribution to Santa Clara and the National Electric System (SEN).
For his part, worker Amaury Curbelo, head of a brigade, stated that the most important thing about this entity is that it has no fuel costs, since it is fed by the water from the dam, which has a channel of 14.9 square kilometers and a storage potential of over 280 million cubic meters.
The Hanabanilla hydroelectric plant, located between the mountains of the Guamuhaya mountain range, operators of the control panel, monitor the operation of the unit and the delivery of electrical energy to the country’s balance sheet.
According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, there are 162 hydroelectric power plants in Cuba with a total installed power of 71.9 MW and of these, 34 are connected to the SEN and 128 provide isolated service to homes and economic and social objectives.
