Diaz-Canel presides over event on 60 years of Cuba-Algeria relations

Havana, Oct 19 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Diaz-Canel chaired the ceremony to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cuba and Algeria, held in this capital on Tuesday.

According to the government’s official Twitter account, Algerian Ambassador in Havana Abdelkrim Benchiach congratulated Cuba for its election as president of the Group of 77 plus China for 2023. At the Palace of the Revolution, the diplomat noted that Cuba’s election for that highest position in the coordination group, considered the broadest and most diverse in the multilateral sphere, is a well-deserved recognition of its actions in favor of developing countries.

For his part, Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Rodrigo Malmierca valued how these six decades have contributed to the consolidation and development of ties, which he described as excellent, and to the promotion of collaboration in various spheres.

On several occasions, Cuban authorities have thanked Algeria for its permanent solidarity in the struggle for the lifting of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States.

They have also expressed the will to preserve dialogue at the highest political level and to deepen commercial relations and collaboration for the benefit of both territories.

Cuba and Algeria have maintained diplomatic relations since October 17, 1962. A year later, in May 1963, Cuba’s first internationalist medical brigade arrived in that African country, an event referred to in history as the beginning of the Revolution’s solidarity cooperation.
