British Parliament to analyze request to conduct early elections

London, Oct 17 (Prensa Latina) The British Parliament will analyze a popular petition to conduct early general elections after the chaos generated by the controversial economic plan of the conservative government and calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Liz Truss.

The request to hold the elections scheduled for 2024 as soon as possible has gathered more than 625,000 signatures, well above the 100,000 required to be taken into account by Parliament.

According to the signatories, voters must have the possibility to decide who will guide them through the unprecedented crisis that threatens the United Kingdom.

Among the dangers faced by the country, the petition mentions the resignation of more than 40 ministers during crises caused by the rise in the cost of living, climate and energy, the conflict in Ukraine and the damage caused by the protocol adopted by Northern Ireland on relations with the European Union, as well as the latent recession and the possible disintegration of the United Kingdom due to Scotland’s push for independence.

In its defense, the government argued that changing the leadership of the ruling party does not lead to general elections, and assured that Truss, who replaced Boris Johnson on September 6th, promised to bring opportunity and prosperity to all British citizens and future generations.

Although Truss ruled out days ago bringing the elections forward, her term could be one of the shortest in the country’s history as a result of the chaos generated by her controversial economic plan, which has already cost Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng his job.

As reported by The Times on Monday, some ruling party heavyweights met secretly over the weekend to discuss Truss’s removal and find a replacement for her.

Aside from any press statements, influential “Tory” MP Crispin Blunt told the local television that the “game is over” for Truss, and now it’s just a matter of seeing how the succession is handled.

The internal rules of the Conservative Party give the prime minister a margin of at least one year before she can be subjected to a vote of confidence by her own caucus, but according to Blunt, if the pressure is too strong, a way to impose the vote could be found.
