Havana, Oct 15 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's Consumer Price Index (CPI) grew by 2.33 percent in August compared to the previous month, the National Statistics and Information Office (ONEI) reported on Friday. According to a report published, the indicator that allows knowing the average variation experienced by the prices of a basket of goods and services, representative of the population's consumption in a given period, stood at 233.03 compared to the benchmark year of 2010.

Based on this, the accumulated variation was 20.01 percent and the growth with respect to the same period last year was 34.31 percentage points.

The ONEI explained that the three divisions with the greatest effect on the monthly variation in August were food and non-alcoholic beverages (56.39 percent), restaurants and hotels (15.90), and transportation (13.54).

In the case of beverages and food, the monthly rise was 2.74 percent, and compared to August 2021 it was 54.19.

Meanwhile, the prices of restaurants and hotels grew by 3.63 percent compared to July and those of transportation rose by 2.43.

In order to calculate the CPI, approximately 33,596 prices were collected in 8,607 establishments throughout Cuba.

“This means that the index to be shown is only representative of the country, it does not exist at the regional or municipal levels,” the report stated.
