Cholera cases set off alarms in Lebanon health system

Beirut, Oct 9 (Prensa Latina) After latest report on first cases of cholera since 1993, Lebanon´s health system has been on alert in the midst of the worsening economic and financial crisis.

Supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Children’s Fund, Lebanon´s health authority started off by distributing leaflets nationwide with information on cholera prevention methods, symptoms and proper treatments.

It emphasizes the need to immediately go to nearest hospital or primary health care centers in case of any symptoms such as diarrhea, fever and severe puking.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati called for a meeting with the Ministers of Health, Interior, Municipalities, Energy, Water, Environment and Agriculture to follow up on health measures adopted.

Health authorities’ epidemiological strategy included water sources and sewage testing, bacteriological diagnosis as necessary, and providing an initial stock of vaccines and drugs for treatment.

The Public Health Ministry recommended Lebanese to take of their personal hygiene, not to drink or use unsafe water, wash their hands regularly before preparing or eating food and also after using the toilet.
