China stresses mutual respect in relations with Solomon Islands

Beijing, Oct 8 (Prensa Latina) China on Saturday stressed that the principles of mutual respect and shared gain govern its ties with the Solomon Islands after rejecting accusations by Australia about its alleged attempt at influencing public opinion in the island state.

Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Mao Ning said that for the last three years, the parties have developed ties characterized by openness, inclusion, and equal treatment, have promoted friendly exchanges, and have expanded them to several sectors.

According to the spokeswoman, the result of these contacts for the Solomon Islands is the fundamental reason for the rising people’s positive opinions about the country and the impetus for the continued deepening of the bilateral fraternity.

Mao assured that any efforts to cause problems between Beijing and Honiara would be fruitless.

With her statement, she responded to a report by an Australian institution that accused China of “spreading false narratives and obstructing information on different issues” on the Solomon Islands.

Australia and the United States are increasingly wary of exchanges between the Solomon Islands and China following a recent security agreement.

However, both Beijing and Honaira assured that one of the aims is to maintain social order on the island nation and denied rumors about clauses that allow the establishment of military bases and send Chinese warships and armed forces.
