European Union seeks greater economic sanctions against Russia

UE-sanciones-rusia
Brussels, Oct 5 (Prensa Latina) Representatives of countries of the European Union (EU) agreed today on the preliminary text of a new package of sanctions against Russia, which includes the price of Russian oil.

A note published by that bloc specified that the community ambassadors plan to approve the final text of the measures this Wednesday, the eighth since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine on February 24.

This round of sanctions establishes the legal basis for the price cap, although they still do not have a decision on the price limit, while adding the purpose of hitting the Russian metallurgical industry.

It also seeks more import bans on Russian products and the prohibition for EU citizens to hold positions as senior executives in public companies in the Eurasian country.

The new import restrictions on Russian inputs will deprive Moscow of an additional seven billion euros in revenue. In addition, new refusals to export key technology used by the army, such as aviation products, electronic components and specific chemical substances, are incorporated.

The proposal of the most recent penalties to Moscow was presented last week by president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, after the accession to Russia of the republics of Donbas and the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhie.

Since the military operation in Ukraine began, the European Union and the United States have imposed harsh individual and sectoral sanctions against Russia, with the intention of inflicting as much damage on its economy as possible to pressure to stop hostilities.
