In a statement issued from its headquarters in Nigeria´s capital, ECOWAS reiterated its firm condemnation of the coup and also stressed that it is closely following developments in that nation.
ECOWAS also called for the “end to violence and looting of all kinds”.
The regional bloc, made up of 15 member states, asked the Defense and Security Forces to avoid escalation and, in any case, to shield civilians.
A few hours after Friday´s coup, ECOWAS issued an official statement condemning these actions, which came just as progress has been made towards a methodical return to constitutional order by July 1, 2024.
ECOWAS pointed out its stance to any de facto government by unconstitutional means and called for “the scrupulous respect of the schedule already agreed with Transitional Authorities”.
