The Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL) President Daniel Álvarez has announced the country´s government is presently boosting geothermal energy by implementing new projects for greater dynamism to the country’s domestic economy.
El Salvador is nowadays ready to double geothermal energy generation capacity following the construction of two new projects: the Chinameca Geothermal Plant and the San Vicente Geothermal Plant, Álvarez said in the Global Geothermal Alliance Meeting.
Geothermal energy accounts today for 25% of national energy matrix thanks to the Ahuachapán Geothermal Power Plant and the Berlin Geothermal Power Plant generation, which together generate 190 megawatts, so Salvadoran government is expecting that together with other renewable sources these two plants will represent 100% of the country’s energy generation.
While it is quite true this is a generous investment, the geothermal energy advance is that it keeps geothermal plants always in operation, which means that one megawatt is obtained with less investment than with the use of other renewable sources, the CEL stated.
