Health officials probe suspected Ebola case in western Kenya

Nairobi, Sep 30 (Prensa Latina) Health officials in Kakamega County, western Kenya, are probing a suspected case of Ebola. The patient had recently travelled to eastern Uganda to visit relatives, officials said.

Mumias West Disease Surveillance Coordinator Boaz Gichana said in a statement released on Friday that the patient is currently at St. Mary Hospital isolation unit awaiting lab tests.

Last week, Kenya issued an Ebola alert and called for screening of travelers at entry points on the border with Uganda following an outbreak in the neighboring country.

On September 27, Kampala authorities reported that the Ebola outbreak, a disease that has already killed 23 people, has been registered in new territories.

The disease, first identified back in 1976 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is person-to-person transmitted by contact with bodily fluids or blood, secretions or organs of infected animals including bats, gorillas and monkeys, according to medical sources.
