PAHO to update on monkeypox cases in the Americas

Washington, Sep 27 (Prensa Latina) The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will provide an update on monkeypox cases in the Americas, within the framework of its 30th Conference to be held in this capital.

WHO reported as many as 50,496 infections and 16 deaths in 101 territories from January to September, being the United States, Spain, Brazil, France and Germany among the most hit nations. PAHO, among its side activities for Tuesday is also planning to tackle down on future challenges for mental health based on lessons learned during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The working agenda, in which Health Ministers and other high-level authorities from the Americas are attending, includes the policy for strengthening national regulatory systems for medicines and other health technologies.

In addition to finance and budget issues, among others, participants will assess the Regional Genomic Surveillance Strategy for readiness and response to both epidemics and pandemics.

The PAHO Conference will elect new president coming Wednesday, who will take office on February 1, 2023, for a five-year time.

Candidates to take office are Camilo Alleyne (Panama); Jarbas Barbosa (Brazil); Florence Duperval (Haiti); Nadine Gasman (Mexico), and Daniel Salinas (Uruguay).
