Extreme watch on dams in Cuba

Antonio-Rodriguez
Havana, Sep 27 (Prensa Latina) Antonio Rodríguez, president of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH), assured that the entity is keeping a close watch on the dams in western Cuba, given the passage of Hurricane Ian through this region.

The executive pointed out that 35 dams are currently spilling water, and ten others are at 100 percent of their capacity, which requires extreme monitoring and assessing of rainfall and water storage to make timely decisions.

In a local television report, Rodriguez said that the most complex situation is in Pinar del Río province, whose dams are at 94 percent of their design capacity.

In general, the western region has conditions to store 400 million cubic meters to reach normal waters and 1.1 billion cubic meters to receive the maximum water level, he said.

The INRH president affirmed that the conditions are prepared to protect the pumping equipment, especially in those places that are flooded and isolated, so that the water supply to the population will be affected as little as possible when it is resumed.
