Lara Ivet Pujol, general director of consular affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made this statement at the closing session of the 11th National Meeting of Cuban Residents in Mexico, which is being held in Cordoba municipality, in Veracruz, with the participation of delegates from nearly the entire country.
She noted that enemy groups based in Mexico give the image that they are pressuring the new situation, but it is false because it is the US Government that is promoting it and reviving the bad relationship with Cuba as at the beginning of the Revolution, violating all agreements and certain stability in the minimum links maintained for years.
She pointed out that this stability was concretized with the flexibility of some countries in the region that allowed an orderly migration, which even allowed those who went to live in other countries not to be considered migrants but rather were Cubans residents abroad, regardless of the ruling party in the United States.
But that stability was broken in 2019 with the Covid-19 pandemic and the new Democratic administration, failing to fulfill all its commitments, made a very aggressive regression by deepening the blockade and adopting inhumane measures such as those taken under the Donald Trump administration.
It means, she said, that he increased migratory pressure tremendously, and in a very unfair way, by reducing and almost closing the offices of his diplomatic mission in Havana to force Cubans to seek visas in third countries.
In addition, the US Government did so at the worst moment when the pandemic was at its highest peak, and it maintained and renewed the inclusion of Cuba in the list of countries that supposedly promote terrorism, which paralyzes the Cuban economic system, a decision that is very unfair and an intolerable fallacy
All these elements generated great migratory pressure that is still maintained, but she explained that the vast majority of Cubans leave the island without any obstacle with their documentation in order and then abroad they become undocumented migrants in their eagerness to arrive in the United States.
She did not hide that others risk illegal exits with all the complications derived from that situation.
The Cuban diplomat charged that the media campaign against Cuba contributes to aggravating this situation because it magnifies the economic problems that are not the result of the political system, but of the intensification of the blockade and pressure on its allies.
