More than three million Cubans have voted in popular referendum

Havana, Sep 25 (Prensa Latina) Cuban electoral authorities reported on Sunday that until 11 hours, local time, 3,267,799 people had voted in the referendum on the new Family Code.

The figure accounts for 37.03 percent of the total number of citizens registered in the updated register of voters, National Electoral Council (CEN) Secretary Maria Esther Bacallao, pointed out at a press conference.

At seven in the morning, 23,854 polling stations opened in Cuba and they will remain active until six in the afternoon, according to what is established in Cuba’s regulations for this democratic exercise.

However, Bacallao explained that the influences of Tropical Storm Ian, which threatens to hit the national territory, are beginning to become evident in the country, and in the face of these eventualities, voting hours can be extended where necessary.

The electoral leader pointed out that there have been no significant incidents and that the population has gone to vote with calm and discipline.

She highlighted the participation of young people in the referendum, who hold responsibilities in the polling stations and other instances involved in the voting, in addition to their support for the creation of the computer application that consolidates the data that is issued from each municipality.
