Relatives of disappeared take a stand in Uruguay

Montevideo, Sep 22 (Prensa Latina) The Association of Mothers and Relatives of Uruguayan Detainees and Disappeared Persons on Thursday rejected the decision by the National Human Rights Institution (INDDHH) to recognize a group that defends repressors under judicial process.

The relatives of those who disappeared during the dictatorship that ruled between 1973 and 1985 reacted to the decision by most of the INDDHH’s new board to include the Center for Human Rights Studies of Uruguay (CEDDHHU) in its registry.

CEDDHHU is an organization that promotes a denialist vision of State terrorism, endorsing the pact of silence and violates the memory of the events occurred in the recent past, after describing those who committed crimes against humanity as political prisoners.

This was expressed in a communiqué stating that the decision goes against the norms and principles that gave rise to the Institution, particularly to protect, promote and defend human rights.

INDDHH cannot allow itself to have organizations that deny our 197 relatives of detainees and disappeared people and openly defend human rights violators, both civilian and military, who acted under the protection of the State, the statement concluded.
