Kazakhstan to hold early presidential elections

elecciones-Kazajastan
Astana, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Wednesday announced that the early presidential elections in the country will be held on November 20.

The president also promised that the electoral campaign would be carried out in strict compliance with the legislation of the Republic, the website of Kazakhstanskaya Pravda newspaper reported on Wednesday.

On September 1, Tokayev proposed to hold early presidential elections before December 2022, despite that his first five-year term will expire in 2024, and he announced to extend the presidential term to seven years without the right to re-election.

The following day, Kazakh lawmakers proposed to introduce corresponding amendments to the country’s Constitution and to elect a president for a seven-year term this autumn.

Last week, a corresponding bill, which also included the initiative to return the Kazakh capital to the name Astana, received the green light from the Constitutional Council, was unanimously approved in Parliament and signed by Tokaev.
