Haitian authorities condemn attacks on schools during protests

Port-au-Prince, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) Haiti's Ministry of Education (MENFP) rejected the attacks on educational institutions that occurred during protests to criticize the rise in fuel prices, which should resume in the national territory this Monday.

The Ministry recalled that schools and universities are places of learning, security, and peace for children and young people and described the actions that endanger the educational institutions as unacceptable.

“Deeply alarmed by the increased attacks on schools across the country, the MENFP sounds the alarm to protect the schools and universities, which are public property,” it stated in a communique.

The Ministry also deplored the looting of food warehouses for school canteens that affect the daily nutrition of tens of thousands of children in public schools.

The MENFP and the Directors’ Board of the National Office of Educational Solidarity agreed to create a support fund for the vandalized schools to renew the looted school food stocks.

Last week, Port-au-Prince and other cities remained blocked in the face of the protest over rising fuel prices, which doubled the cost of gasoline and increased diesel prices by 89 percent.
