Pakistan urges SCO to tackle climate change threat

Islamabad, Sep 16 (Prensa Latina) Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif urged the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to "build a wall" against climate change, during the Summit of the organization, which brought together China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, India and Pakistan.

In his speech at the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO, which is being held in the city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Sharif warned that almost 1,500 people perished in the floods in his country, while millions have been displaced.

“It is a catastrophe of unknown proportions for the people of Pakistan and, of course, for the entire world,” Sharif said during the meeting. “The catastrophic floods in Pakistan are definitely induced by climate change.”

“This is where I would appeal and seriously ask all of you to allow the SCO to stand up and build a wall against this threat. This can be done through a sustainable plan,” the prime minister said.

Sharif met with the president of Russia Vladimir Putin, of Turkey Tayyip Erdogan, and of Iran Ebrahim Raisi within the framework of the Summit, and tweeted saying that these meetings focused on improving trade and investment.

He also reaffirmed the commitment to work closely with Russia to expand bilateral cooperation in all areas of mutual benefit, such as food security, trade, investment, energy, defense and security, with the parties agreeing to convene a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission in Islamabad in an upcoming date.
